Abstract
Considerable evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide anion (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), mediate many of the pathophysiological events that lead to the development of several human diseases. In the present reports, we investigated the protective effect of some natural products such as Cordyceps sinensis (CSE), Paecilomyces tenuipes (PTE) against the U.V. mutagenesis and cytotoxicity induced by H2O2. Both natural products restored the growth rate of E. coli pretreated with H2O2. The protection by PTE was more effective than that of CSE at the various concentration ranges. To confirm this protective effect in eukaryotes, the single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) was performed with rat hepatocyte. The nuclear tailing was decreased when the CSE or PTE were treated to the cells which has been damaged by H2O2. Furthermore, the mutation rate induced by U.V. irradiation was significantly decreased by both natural products. These lines of results indicate that CSE and PTE protect against the oxidative damage by hydrogen peroxide as well as the mutagenesis induced by U.V. irradiation and these natural products can be used as anti-aging food or cosmetic components.
